August 16, 2010—State of the Union on Building and Urban Developments. Highlighting the 2010 World Exposition

On Monday morning after a welcome remark from the hosting Chinese Officials, Stanford University and Tongji University will kick off the summit with a definition and insights into the global trends of sustainable built environment.  Dean Siegfried Wu, Tongji University Assistant President and Chief Planner of the 2010 World Expo, will reflect on the unique challenges, urban sustainability strategies, the concept of Harmony-City, and comfort-oriented VDC simulation, while assessing how the mega short-term event would become a catalyst for a sustainable urban future, with an investigation into the relationship between economy restructuring and heritage preservation. 

International design and construction professionals, such as the European designers and operators of the Finland Pavilion and the China/US-based contractor Mortenson who constructed the Shanghai Expo Performance Center, will join their Chinese counterparts (Chinese general managers, designers, builders and operators of Expo 2010) in sharing case examples, metrics, and lessons learned from the multi-billion Expo project.  Stanford University and Tongji University researchers will present an Expo Tour Guide integrated with the theme of this summit, to prepare professionals and scholars from the building industry to plan their tours on Day 2 and Day 3.  Monday will end with an ice-breaking reception and dinner gala for the participants to experience Shanghai and enjoy a mid-summer evening with their spouses and guests. The day will conclude with a VIP dinner for the keynote speakers, panel speakers, supporting organizations, sponsors and organizers.

August 17-18, 2010—Expo 2010 Guided Tours Integrated with Summit Themes

On Tuesday and Wednesday, tour buses will bring summit participants from the Shangri-La to the 2010 Expo site, accompanied by English-Chinese translators and summit organizers and student volunteersOfficial Expo Planners, General Managers, Designers, Construction Managers and Operators will offer summit participants their unique insights and experiences as we visit the four permanent pavilions, the transportation hub, the main axes, and the Urban Best Practice Area.  

A number of supporting organizations and global participants of this summit are aligning special tours, receptions, demonstrations and presentations at their respective pavilions exclusively for the summit participants—such as Mortenson at the Shanghai World Expo Center, a consortium of Finnish companies in Virtual Design and Construction led by Tekla at the Finland National Pavilion.  Summit participants will have their own time to choose and visit among the 45 national pavilions, 192 countries and 50 international organizations who are showcasing their visions of “Better City, Better Life”.  Summit participants can decide whether they would like to stay for evening performances as there will be tour buses running at different departure times back to the Shangri-La Hotel.

August 19, 2010—Perspectives and Approaches to Sustainable Built Environment. Highlighting Global Examples in Building and Urban Developments

On Thursday, Stanford-CIFE and Tongji University have invited their industry collaborators to explore sustainability and innovation from the urban, design, and operation perspectives.  Owners and operators such as the Hong Kong Mass Transit Railway, Shui On, and Walt Disney Imagineering will be joined by industry experts and solution providers such as Arup, Autodesk, China State Construction, and Max Boegl to offer global examples on commercial, residential, urban and infrastructure projects.  Summit participants will then have an opportunity to engage in an interactive townhall discussion with an expert panel to compare the intent and performance of Expo 2010 with the promises and trends of global projects.  An exhibition area will be set up on Thursday and Friday to demonstrate proven and emerging technologies in a high-energy format. 

August 20, 2010—Scaling from Projects to Policy.  Proven Technologies, Emerging Research and Our Vision for the Sustainable Built Environment

The final day of the summit will feature an owner’s forum to discuss the scalability of sustainable goals and innovation from projects to policy, and from a premium mandate to becoming an industry culture.  Public owner representatives from Australia, China, Finland, Hong Kong, Norway, United States, and other countries will speak on topics such as energy consumption mandates, high-performance buildings, sustainability, metrics, building information modeling values, national standards, and international collaboration among public owners.  Private developers, owners and operators such as the Hong Kong Mass Transit Railway, Shui On, and Walt Disney Imagineering will join the discussion on integrated practice, team partnering, and training necessary to fully benefit from virtual design and construction and building information modeling.  An exhibition area will be set up on Thursday and Friday to demonstrate proven and emerging technologies in a high-energy format.  Friday afternoon will be highlighted by a vision for the future.  Remarks and reflections from an international representation such as AIA-TAP (the American Institute of Architects—Technology in Architectural Practice), Australia’s SBE (Sustainable Built Environment National Research Center), HKIBIM (Hong Kong Institute of Building Information Modeling), Japan’s Nikkei Publications, Stanford University-CIFE, Tongji University will illuminate the alternate strategies for 2020 as well as the tactics within the next 12 months.

Phillip Benstein
Mr Phillip Bernstein FAIA, RIBA, LEED AP
Vice President, Industry Strategy and Relations, Autodesk AEC Solutions

Mr Bernstein is responsible for setting Autodesk’s future vision and strategy for technology serving the building industry, as well as cultivating and sustaining the firm’s relationships with strategic industry leaders and associations.

Prior to joining Autodesk in 2000, Mr Bernstein was an Associate Principal at Cesar Pelli & Associates, where he was project manager for many of the firm’s most complex commissions, including the Goldman Sachs corporate headquarters, the Performing Arts Center of Greater Miami, the Brooklyn Federal Courthouse, the Practice Integration Building at the Mayo Clinic, the New North Terminal at Washington National Airport, and the Lerner Research Center at the Cleveland Clinic. He was responsible for general management support in the firm, providing fee analysis, delivery and team structure, risk management, technology strategy and contract negotiation for many of the firm’s projects.

Mr Bernstein has served as Lecturer in Professional Practice at the Yale University School of Architecture since 1988. In addition, he is a Trustee of the Emma Willard School of Troy, NY, a Senior Fellow of the Design Futures Council, a Fellow of the American Institute of Architects, and former Chair of the AIA National Documents Committee.

Mr Bernstein received a Bachelor of Arts magna cum laude with Distinction in Architecture in 1979 from Yale University and a Master of Architecture in 1983, also from Yale University.

Mr Bögl joined Max Bögl group in 1999 and became a member of the extended management board and head of its R & D department by 2003.

Headquartered in Germany, Max Bögl ranks among the top five of the biggest German building companies. Owing to innovations in technology and organization, Max Bögl has developed in the course of the decades from a provider of mere building services to an internationally operating technology and service company. Its activities range over all fields and complexity factors of the modern building industry – from structural engineering and traffic route building to civil engineering and tunnel construction to steel and plant construction, the prefabricated part manufacturing as well as supply and disposal.

Mr Bögl studied Mechanical Engineering with the extension for welding engineering at the University of Applied Sciences in Regensburg.

As an expert in green building, Vice President Chen’s research interests cover energy-saving building and new energy, development and application of new energy, building economy and construction management, programming and construction of campus, and so on.

He led many important national projects including Important Project of Magnetic Suspension Technology (National “863 Plan”), Important Project of Fuel Cell Electrical Vehicle (National “863 Plan”), Project of Conservation-Oriented Campus (Ministry of Construction and Ministry of Education Level), Project of Building a Conservation-Oriented Campus in Tongji University and so on.

Vice President Chen received numerous awards at ministry and provincial levels. He was often invited as keynote speakers by many international forums such as Expo forum and Tokyo forum in 2010. He has published over 20 papers on sustainable built environment, energy-saving constructions, quality of engineering projects and so on.

Prof Fischer is a Senior Fellow with the Precourt Institute for Energy, an affiliated faculty member with the Woods Institute for the Environment and with the Emmett Interdisciplinary Program in Environment and Resources. He recently assisted the California Governor in the launch of Green Products Innovation Institute.

Dr. Fischer is known globally for his work and leadership in developing virtual 4D modeling (time plus 3D) methods to improve project planning, enhance facility life-cycle performance, increase the productivity of project teams, and further the sustainability of the built environment. His award winning research results have been used by many small and large industrial and government organizations around the world.

Prof Kazuo Iwamura

Kazuo Iwamura worked in Europe and Saudi Arabia in his early years after graduating from Waseda University. He later returned to Japan and founded IWAMURA Atelier in Tokyo in 1980. The practice focuses upon urban and architectural research, design, implementation and consulting, based on a holistic environmental design approach by networking related experts or organizations according to project features. R&D on CASBEE is one of his recent major commitments based on the related activities.

He has published five books on sustainable environment and related topics. He was also awarded over a dozen prizes including World Habitat Award in 2001 by UN-Habitat, and recognised by the Architectural Institute of Japan in 2003 for a series of works regarding “Environmentally Symbiotic Housing”.

He is also a professor at Tokyo City University with a special interest in environmental housing design for a sustainable future.

Dr. Calvin Kam

Dr Kam is the Director of Industry Programs with the Center for Integrated Facility Engineering at Stanford University, where he partners with CIFE industry members on strategic and innovative programs in areas such as Building Information Modeling, Virtual Design and Construction and Sustainable Developments. Calvin is a Consulting Assistant Professor with the School of Engineering at Stanford University. He is the 2010 & 2011 National Chairman of the American Institute of Architects’ Technology in Architectural Practice Knowledge Community with over 10,000 members.

Dr Kam is a co-founder and the Senior Program Expert of GSA’s National 3D-4D-BIM Program Manager with the Public Buildings Service. Under Calvin’s management, GSA has required BIM submission in its $20 billion capital program; published the GSA BIM Guide Series; established a network of BIM Champions; formalized international partnerships with Finland, Norway, and Denmark; while earning a number of national and international awards.

Jacob Kam

Dr Kam joined MTR Corporation in Hong Kong in 1995 and held several senior management positions in safety and quality, projects, engineering, operations and international businesses. Dr Kam is now the Deputy Operations Director and will become Operations Director on 1 January 2011.

Dr Kam is currently responsible for the management of all railway assets in the existing network, at a total value around US$15 billion. His responsibilities include the assurance of system safety, reliability performance, the management of maintenance, upgrade and replacement programs for all railway assets and the preparation of operating and maintenance resources for new railway extensions / lines.

Dr Kam obtained his PhD from University College London on structural integrity and risk management.He also holds a Certificate from Advanced Management Programme of Wharton Business School, USA.

Li Xun

As an expert in urban planning, Prof Li has participated in over 100 urban planning research projects in China in which he has finished nearly 20 of them, offered guidance on a few dozens ones and actively involved in over 20 projects. As a result, these projects won a total of five awards from the Ministry of Construction and one Huaxia Construction Science and Technology Award.

Prof Li joined the Urban Master Planning Institute of China Academy of Urban Planning & Design since 1982. He became vice director by 1996 and began to supervise masters’ degree students.

Dr Li has been researching on the application of information technology in the construction industry for many years, including the design of high-rise building structures, CAD design, and the reliability of engineering structures.

The PKPM software for CAD design which was developed under the guidance of Dr Li has become one of the major computer programs being used in the design of the building structures of high-rise and even skyscrapers in China. Nearly one-third of local companies use the software which has also been widely promoted across Asia.

Dr Li took part in many researches and published 45 papers. He won the second prize of the China’s State Science and Technology award (first runner up) in 1998, and the second prize of the China’s State Science and Technology award (champion) in 1999.

David Nieh
Mr David Nieh AIA, AICP, LEED AP

Mr Nieh formerly directed the studio for Skidmore, Owings and Merrill’s (SOM) Shanghai office, and was chief architect for the City of San Jose and Redevelopment Agency. He has taught architecture, urban design and urban studies at Stanford University and is an honorary member of the International Society for City and Regional Planners and a member of the China Planning Network.

Mr Nieh has served on advisory boards ranging from strategic economics, creative communities, campus development, education, social innovation, biotech and public art. He is currently a Board Member for the Joint US-China Collaboration on Clean Energy (JUCCCE), Stanford Program on Regions of Innovation and Entrepreneurship (SPRIE) and Cogswell College in Silicon Valley.

With social benefit and energy sustainability as key principles, his projects are large-scale and urban in nature, focusing on the translation of strategic planning initiatives into the implementation of infrastructure, architecture and built form. His work has won numerous awards and he has been a guest speaker in Asia, North America and Europe. He has published seminal articles in the International Society for City and Regional Planners “Creative Communities” edition, World Architecture, as well as other publications.

Dr Ben Schwegler

The Walt Disney Company is a diverse international entertainment company with a long-standing commitment and reputation of excellence in environmental management, Dr Schwegler is responsible for Imagineering’s Sustainable Design and Engineering group; a multidisciplinary organization of engineers, architects, scientists and other design professionals chartered to understand the interaction of the built and natural environment, and to design infrastructure and buildings to minimize their negative impacts.

A unique feature of this approach is that it merges innovations in productivity for the design and construction industry with more traditional scientific discipline approaches to sustainability, such as energy efficiency, ecosystem functions and services, habitat protection, and control of air, water and soil pollution. This approach specifically enables the explicit linking of resources used in construction and operation of buildings and infrastructure to those of the “natural” environment.

Dr Schwegler is also a member of the Jet Propulsion Laboratory’s Technical Divisions Advisory Board, a winner of the Henry R. Michel Award from the American Society of Civil Engineers and a juror for the Sloan Prize for the best portrayal of science in a feature film at the Sundance Film Festival.

As an expert in project management, Prof Wang has conducted many researches on construction project management, risk management, project management information system, 3D/4D models, and project financing in the past two decades.

He has also gained much industry practice experience by taking part in the management of over a dozen construction projects, including the Shanghai Branch of People’s Bank of China, Changsha Tobacco Factory, Shanghai Stock Exchange Building, Xiamen International Convention and Exhibition Center, Shanghai Metro, Guangzhou Metro, Guangzhou Baiyun International Airport, Xuzhou Gymnasium, Shanghai World Financial Center, Sino-German Friendship Hospital and so on.

Prof Wang was a visiting professor at Stanford University from 2007 to 2008.

Professor Z. C. Wu
Prof Wu Zhiqiang

As the Chief Planner of the Shanghai Expo, Prof Wu fulfilled a full range of site investigations and analysis from topography to existing buildings and constructions with his team members. He has been with interdisciplinary experts working on several research projects including comfort outdoor thermal environment, natural wind field simulation and so on which intend to experiment the whole site for future urban sustainable development. In order to memorize local industrial culture, he proposed to preserve the plants and facilities of the factories in the Expo site with total area of 250,000 m2. It is the first time in Expo history to use preserved buildings as pavilions.

Prof Wu is an active scholar, planner and dedicated educator in the field of architecture and urban planning. Through his professional years, He has always been actively involved with the urban planning and design practice around China and abroad, including New Town Planning of Saint Petersburg, Russia, and Dujiangyan Post-disaster City Reconstruction Plan.

Prof Wu received his Dr.-Ing degree in 1996 from Technical University of Berlin, Germany. He also serves as Co-Chair of International Steering Committee of World Planning Schools Congress (WPSC), Permanent member of UNESCO-UIA World Architectural Education Council, Director of Planning Education Steering Council of China, Vice President of Urban Planning Society of China, etc. In 2001, Prof Wu organized 1st World Planning School Congress (WPSC) as general secretary.

Zhang Yue

Prof Zhu’s research interests include sustainable development, ecological economics, urban and regional development, public service, macro-policy, corporate social responsibility and so on. He was a senior research scholar at Harvard University in 2004-2005 and a visiting research fellow at Melbourne University in 1994-1995. He has published three books and more than 200 papers and articles and involved in several important research projects from international organizations such as UNDP, UNEP, WB, ADB and so on.

He is awarded the special allowance by China’s State Council and also a member of the Social Science Commission under the Chinese Education Ministry, a member of the Experts Commission on Sustainable Development & Resource and Environment under the Chinese Construction Ministry, a special policy advisor for Shanghai Municipal Government and some other Chinese cities, and an environmental expert for Expo 2010 in Shanghai.

Dr Vladimir BAZJANAC

Dr Bazjanac is world’s leading expert in environmental protection and formerly a long-time faculty member in the Department of Architecture, University of California.

He won many national architectural design, industry and scientific awards. Dr Bazjanac published over 130 articles, papers and reports related to the AECO industry on design theory, simulation, information technology, and software interoperability and lectured at major universities and professional societies in both Americas, Europe, Australia and Asia.

He is a leader of buildingSMART International Technical Advisory Group.

Joachim Brech

Dr Brech was founder and managing director of Wohnbund e.V., an intermediate consultancy office for urban planning and research projects. In this position, he organized several international congresses on new housing types and urban planning in Europe.

He was conferred a Guest-Professorship from the University of Kassel, conducting research on sustainability for the German Federal Ministry of Transport, Building and Urban Development. Dr Brech founded b+m GmbH, a project development corporation in housing projects in collaboration with Max Bögl.

Dr. Brech graduated in architecture at the Technical University of Munich. He obtained his PhD in urban planning.

Mr Chen joined Architectural Design & Research Institute of Tongji University since 1992. He was accredited as State Grade I Registered Architect in 1998 and was promoted to become Deputy Director of Architectural Unit and subsequently as Deputy Head of First Bureau. He then worked in US Greenberg Farrow Architects from 2004 to 2008.

Mr Chen returned to Architectural Design & Research Institute of Tongji University by 2008 and became Deputy Chief Architect in 2010. He was graduated from Hefei University of Technology with a bachelor’s degree in Architectural Engineering and a masters’ degree from the Graduate School of Architecture, Southeast University.

Ronan Collins

Mr Collins is an experienced BIM Project Manager and specializes in the leadership, implementation and production of detailed and accurate BIM models for the purpose of design and construction co-ordination. He is responsible for planning and directing BIM projects in direct collaboration with clients, consultants and contractors.

By combining structural engineering knowledge and skills, leadership and management talents and the latest BIM processes, he founded InteliBuild in 2003 in Hong Kong as an independent BIM Consultancy to provide expert professional services. InteliBuild employs architects, engineers, construction planners and BIM technicians to produce models for construction projects.

Mr Anthony Elvey

Mr Elvey is an international marketer with over 30 years experience specializing in the marketing of technology products, services and solutions, automotive, financial and other service industries. During this time Mr Elvey has worked on both the agency and client side of marketing, in Europe, the US and Asia.

While at IBM, Mr Elvey was directly involved in their massive sponsorship of the 2000 Sydney Olympics, as the host country Director of Marketing, gaining valuable experience which has led him to his current role as Director and GM of Shanghai Expo Program for Cisco and Cisco Pavilion Director.

Mr Pekka HAANPÄÄ

Mr Haanpää has worked for 13 years with various construction engineering projects as a senior project engineer for Ramboll Finland Ltd upon his graduation. During his working career, he continued to study in Oxford University and Tampere University of Technology, and has taken part in many R&D projects involving 3D design.

For the last 18 months, he has been working as a design coordinator in Lemminkäinen China Ltd, part of the Lemminkäinen Group, a 100 years old Finnish construction group that nowadays operates internationally in all areas of the construction sector. He supported the Finland Pavilion project.

Prof Hao has focused on the engineering design, research, and teaching on light, color, visual and lighting. As chief coordinator, Prof Hao was responsible for many major research projects at national and provincial levels. Her research area covered Beijing Olympic Stadium and Shanghai Expo with significant achievements.

Prof Hao has published nearly 60 papers and two books and accomplished over 20 engineering design projects. She acted as project manager in the lighting design for Shanghai Expo Site, Expo Cultural Center, Hangzhou West Lake Night Scene, Hefei Grand Theatre and so on.

Mr Ryota Ieiri

Freelance writer on BIM

Mr Ieiri is a Japanese freelance journalist specializing in BIM and Construction ICT. He was used to work for Nikkei Business Publications for 20 years as an editor of “KEN-Platz” -- Japan’s leading website for Architecture / Engineering / Construction fields, and “Nikkei Construction” Magazine.

He later focused mainly on BIM and Construction ICT usage in A/E/C industries. His reports on the newest BIM trends were published in “Ieiri’s Construction IT Lab”, Nikkei’s first official blog named after a person. It helped Japanese architects, engineers, and managers to understand BIM’s concept and applications.

Mr Kobayashi graduated from Tokyo University in 1984 and subsequently joined Nihon Sekkei. He is now Chief Architect of the company. He has been involved in the design of many leading projects in Asia, including Japan Club in Singapore, University of Malaysia in Sarawak, Xiamen International Convention and Exhibition Center, Xiamen Straits Exchange Center, Shanghai Conhojin Complex, Shenyang Shopping Complex and so on.

He is the architect of Japan Pavilion at Shanghai Expo.

Prof Arto Kiviniemi
Professor, Digital Architectural Design at the University of Salford


Prof Kiviniemi is an expert in Building Information Modeling (BIM). Prior to his current position, he gained much experience in the architectural industry in his position as Vice President of Innovation and Development at Olof Granlund (2008-2010), as Research Professor (2006-2008) and Chief Research Scientist (1996-2006) at VTT.

Since 1996, Prof Kiviniemi has developed integrated BIM both in Finland and internationally including the management of a large Finnish Research and Development program “VERA” from 1997 to 2002.

Prof Kiviniemi was Deputy Chairman (2000-2002), and Chairman of the International Technical Management Committee (2005-2007) of buildingSMART International.

Ms Vicki Lau

Ms Lau is the Geographic Information System Specialist in Arup and the leader of GIS team in Hong Kong. She had a broad range of project experience in many East Asia countries such as mainland China, Singapore, the Philippines, and South Korea.

She implemented GIS in multi-disciplines including geotechnical, railway, environmental, civil, structural and master planning. She is also Arup GIS skill network leader in East Asia region and is responsible for promoting GIS skill and providing project support to regional office.

Prof Le has been researching and teaching on engineering management, project management, and related information technology system for decades and has published several books and over 50 academic papers in these area.

Prof Le now manages the operation of Expo, advises on its environmental management, as well as managing the Expo Village project. He has participated in many leading projects including Shanghai Stock Exchange Building, headquarters of Bank of Communications, Xiamen International Convention and Exhibition Center, Guangzhou Baiyun International Airport, and Shanghai Metro Line No. 1.

Ms Wendy LEE

Ms Lee joined Autodesk Far East Limited in 2000 and has held several key sales positions to develop business in the AEC industry segment in the Greater China Region. Ms Lee is now a Doctor of Business Administration Candidate at the University of South Australia with research topic related to the Building Information Modeling (BIM) technology adoption in Hong Kong.

Before joining Autodesk, he served as Director of Enterprise and Government sales, China, F5 Networks Inc., responsible for sales strategy and implementation and business development for the enterprise, financial and government businesses from 2006 to 2008.

From 2005 to 2006, he served as TELETCH (NASDAQ: TTEC) Asia Pacific’s business development manager for Greater China, responsible for sales strategy and implementation and business development in Greater China.

Vince Li

The Senior Account Manager and Business Development Manager, Unis Document Solution (UDS)


Mr Li is one of the founding members of UDS, the first joint venture between UNIS and ARC. He was the main driver in setting up the business and accounting model for UDS which is now a leading reprographics provider in China. He is responsible for developing business opportunities especially for the multinational companies.

Mr Li graduated from University of Toronto with a bachelor degree in business administration.

Mr Ma Liang
Supervisor, Construction and Facilities Department, Shanghai Expo Co-ordination Bureau

Mr Ma is studying his doctorate degree in engineering management in Tongji University. He participated in the engineering construction, facilities management and environmental management of Shanghai Expo. He was mainly involved in the initial planning, project management and project controlling of Expo-village and Expo-site construction. His excellent performance earned him several awards from the Expo.

Mr Ma has done much research in engineering management and took part in the editing and writing of several academic books as well as publishing many research papers.

Dr Shuke Miao

As the General Manager of Mortenson China, Dr Miao’s responsibilities include overall strategy development and direction of all facets of the group, including relationship management, operations, and business development activities, as well as P&L responsibilities.

Dr Miao graduated from Tsinghua University and worked in China construction industry prior to acquiring his PhD in the United States in 1994 and joining Mortenson in 1995. He managed and oversaw a good number of large scale projects in California before moving back to China in 2005.

Mr Pang joined Benoy after graduation and has worked in the firm’s offices in the UK and China. He led on a number of major projects encompassing a wide range of typologies, including city centre mixed-use and museums to retail, office and commercial-led developments.

Mr Pang was seconded to the UK Trade and Investment as the ‘Infrastructure Specialist’ to Western China in 2009. He spearheaded the British Government’s ‘UK-Chongqing Action Plan for Sustainable Cities’ to assist in achieving sustainable development in Chongqing. He presented recommendations and guidance to regional government.

Since then, he has obtained over 100 patents for his inventions, including Vacuum Boiler, Direct-fired Chiller (non-electric air conditioning), Cooling, Heating and Power System, A/C indoor units with electrostatic cleaner, and Factory Built Sustainable Building. Each invention has transformed the industry, making Broad a technological leader in many fields.

Facing the climate change, Mr Zhang hopes that his non-electric air conditioning system can replace its electric counterpart as the former is more than twice as energy efficient as the latter. By promoting the construction of sustainable buildings, we can be five times more energy efficient.
