August 16, 2010—State of the Union on Building and Urban Developments. Highlighting the 2010 World Exposition
On Monday morning after a welcome remark from the hosting Chinese Officials, Stanford University and Tongji University will kick off the summit with a definition and insights into the global trends of sustainable built environment. Dean Siegfried Wu, Tongji University Assistant President and Chief Planner of the 2010 World Expo, will reflect on the unique challenges, urban sustainability strategies, the concept of Harmony-City, and comfort-oriented VDC simulation, while assessing how the mega short-term event would become a catalyst for a sustainable urban future, with an investigation into the relationship between economy restructuring and heritage preservation.
International design and construction professionals, such as the European designers and operators of the Finland Pavilion and the China/US-based contractor Mortenson who constructed the Shanghai Expo Performance Center, will join their Chinese counterparts (Chinese general managers, designers, builders and operators of Expo 2010) in sharing case examples, metrics, and lessons learned from the multi-billion Expo project. Stanford University and Tongji University researchers will present an Expo Tour Guide integrated with the theme of this summit, to prepare professionals and scholars from the building industry to plan their tours on Day 2 and Day 3. Monday will end with an ice-breaking reception and dinner gala for the participants to experience Shanghai and enjoy a mid-summer evening with their spouses and guests. The day will conclude with a VIP dinner for the keynote speakers, panel speakers, supporting organizations, sponsors and organizers.
August 17-18, 2010—Expo 2010 Guided Tours Integrated with Summit Themes
On Tuesday and Wednesday, tour buses will bring summit participants from the Shangri-La to the 2010 Expo site, accompanied by English-Chinese translators and summit organizers and student volunteers. Official Expo Planners, General Managers, Designers, Construction Managers and Operators will offer summit participants their unique insights and experiences as we visit the four permanent pavilions, the transportation hub, the main axes, and the Urban Best Practice Area.
A number of supporting organizations and global participants of this summit are aligning special tours, receptions, demonstrations and presentations at their respective pavilions exclusively for the summit participants—such as Mortenson at the Shanghai World Expo Center, a consortium of Finnish companies in Virtual Design and Construction led by Tekla at the Finland National Pavilion. Summit participants will have their own time to choose and visit among the 45 national pavilions, 192 countries and 50 international organizations who are showcasing their visions of “Better City, Better Life”. Summit participants can decide whether they would like to stay for evening performances as there will be tour buses running at different departure times back to the Shangri-La Hotel.
August 19, 2010—Perspectives and Approaches to Sustainable Built Environment. Highlighting Global Examples in Building and Urban Developments
